Josh Charney is a performer, composer, and improviser residing in San Diego, CA. Whether his compositions exist for ensembles, soloists, or film, dance, and theater productions, Charney's music engages with inventive rhythmic structures, cyclical atmospheres, and rich spontaneity. He earned his MFA from CalArts in the Performer/Composer Program, where he studied with Wadada Leo Smith. He has also participated in the Upbeat Uzmah summer composition course in Croatia where he studied under the tutelage of Dr. Joel Hoffman. Currently he is pursuing his PhD in Music - Integrative Studies from UCSD where he is studying with Anthony Davis. As a pianist, he has worked with, amongst others, Vinny Golia, Alphonso Johnson, Adam Rudolph, Wadada Leo Smith, Mark Dresser, and Rahman Jamaal.
